Good morning friends,
Quote of the week:
For every “what” you offer the young people in your life, be sure to add two “whys”. First, why is the claim you’re making true? When teaching about the nature of God, for example, it’s tempting to default to “because the Bible says so” when a young person asks us to defend a claim. But take the time to explain the philosophical or evidential support beyond the teaching of the Bible. Why is the Bible’s definition of God as an eternal, all-powerful, uncreated Creator evidentially reasonable? Why does the Bible’s definition of God make sense? Young people want to know why we believe what we believe. If we want them to get excited, we need to help them see that the Christian worldview is reasonable and evidentially true. Next, help young people understand why any of this should matter to them. Once we’ve described what is true and why it’s supported by the evidence, take the time to explain why they should care in the first place. How does this truth impact their lives? How does it change the way they view themselves or the world around them? How does this truth guide or protect them? – Sean McDowell and J Warner Wallace (So the Next Generation Will Know)
Now, here are your weekly links:
- How to NOT shelter your kids from ideas: Teaching our kids to think well – The Benefit of the Doubt – Here’s how it often goes: Mom, Dad, youth pastor, and pastor tell little hypothetical Suzy that Darwinian evolution is a foolish idea for which there is no evidence. They are sure to mock the notion that we descended from apes and disparage the people that hold it. She is told only people who are angry at and hostile towards God believe in Darwin’s theories because they will do anything to avoid God. She grows up believing only idiots and angry atheists believe in Darwinian evolution. Suzy head’s off to college very confident in her Christian faith only to find that the smartest people on campus believe in Darwinian evolution and they don’t seem particularly concerned with God. There is a wide variety of evidence presented for Darwinian evolution in a variety of classes and there’s nothing from her upbringing that’s helpful in answering these challenges. The student feels betrayed and lied to. Before you know it, Suzy is in a crisis of faith. I’d like to suggest that this disparage-other-worldviews-and-hope-for-the-best strategy is not the best strategy.: https://www.travisdickinson.com/not-shelter-kids-ideas-strategy-1/
- 3 Reasons Why Christians Should Be Evidential Investigators Instead of Experience Junkies (Alisa Childers) – Two men. Both grew up in Christian homes in suburban America. Both have famous Evangelical fathers. Both made personal decisions for Christ and became actively involved and well-known in ministry. One walked away from his faith and became a secular humanist. The other has become one of the top apologists and defenders of the Christian faith. Who are these two men? The first is Bart Campolo, son of evangelist and author Tony Campolo, and the other is Sean McDowell, son of evangelist and author Josh McDowell. Why did their fairly similar paths lead them to such radically different destinations?: https://www.alisachildersblog.com/blog/3-reasons-why-christians-should-be-evidential-investigators-instead-of-experience-junkies
- Apologetics Isn’t Argumentative – Some people discount apologetics because being argumentative is wrong. I agree…being argumentative is wrong. But apologetics isn’t argumentative. At least, it shouldn’t be. When a drunk driver crashes into a crowd of people, we don’t fault the car. The problem is the manner in which the car was driven. He drove while inebriated and was negligent. In other words, we distinguish between the thing itself (the car) and the manner in which it’s driven (drunk). In the same way, we can distinguish between apologetics and the manner in which it is practiced. A person can have an argumentative personality. He can be belligerent, crass, and hostile. That manner is expressed when he participates in an apologetics conversation. In fact, it could be expressed in any interaction. The problem is not with apologetics, but with the character of the person.: https://www.str.org/w/apologetics-isn-t-argumentative
- Shall We Resurrect the Conspiracy Theory? | Reasonable Faith – Purusha, my heart sinks every time I get a letter like this. Though you very kindly say that you’ve admired my work for years, you nevertheless-how else can I say it?-reveal that you have little understanding of the historical case for Jesus’ resurrection. Do you mean seriously to suggest that the original disciples stole Jesus’ body from the tomb and then lied to people about the resurrection appearances? Don’t you realize that this old conspiracy theory, which was propounded by Deists in the 17-18th centuries, has been dead for over 200 years, that no contemporary scholar would defend such a view? Even before I respond to your specific question, can I at least get you to sit back and ask yourself, “Why does everybody reject this theory, even though it seems so persuasive to me? What’s the probability that all historical scholars are wrong and I alone am right? Where’s my blind spot?”: https://www.reasonablefaith.org/writings/question-answer/shall-we-resurrect-the-conspiracy-theory

- Astronomer for biblical creation | Creation.com – Donna Mullenax B.S., B.A., B.Ed., M.S. I grew up on a farm in West Virginia. Surrounded by rocks, mountains, animals, farm machinery, and stars. I fell in love with figuring out how things worked. I was always exploring. My family also processed their own meat, which allowed me to study the anatomy of a variety of animals (cows, pigs, chickens, turkeys, etc.). Snow fed my love for physics. Sled riding (especially figuring out how to go faster), building snow forts, learning to drive in snow – all fueled my passion to learn more. And God also gave me a love of mathematics, which blended well with the science, especially physics. Having orthopedic issues from birth also increased my desire to learn how the human body and X-rays work. Really, I love physics. I love astronomy. But I love all science fields. The connections between science disciplines are just fascinating to study and to see the bigger picture of the created universe. Even to this day, I refer back to what I learned as a young person. My childhood was a blessing filled with opportunities to experience a wide range of science.: https://creation.com/en/articles/astronomer-for-biblical-creation

- How Albert Einstein Found Faith at the Edge of Reason | The MIT Press Reader – I was disappointed that this author did not include one of Einstein’s most explicit religious quotes: “As a child I received instruction both in the Bible and in the Talmud. I am a Jew, but I am enthralled by the luminous figure of the Nazarene. No one can read the Gospels without feeling the actual presence of Jesus. His personality pulsates in every word. No myth is filled with such life” (which was from an interview of Einstein published in The Saturday Evening Post on October 26, 1929). Nevertheless, the author included the following interesting content… Though wary of organized religion, the physicist believed that the harmony of universal laws pointed to a higher power. He tried to dissociate himself from organized religious activities and associations, inventing his own form of religiousness. There were no boundaries or barriers between Einstein’s scientific and religious feelings. Einstein’s “religious feeling” found expression in later years in his deep interest and actions to ameliorate the difficulties to which fellow Jews were being subjected, actions ranging from his fights against anti-Semitism to his embrace of Zionism… Some quotes from Einstein: “I believe in Spinoza’s God, Who reveals Himself in the lawful harmony of the world.”, “The cosmic religious feeling is the strongest and noblest motive for scientific research.” He abhorred all nationalisms, and called himself, even while in Berlin during World War I, a European. Later, he supported the One World movement, dreamed of a unified supernational form of government…: https://thereader.mitpress.mit.edu/how-albert-einstein-found-faith-at-the-edge-of-reason/

- Witnessing to Hindus – what is the key? | GotQuestions.org – The problem with witnessing to the Hindu is that he sees himself as a believer. While trying to witness to a Hindu, we must remember that we are involved in spiritual warfare that can only be won by sincere and focused prayers. So that is the place to begin. Pray regularly for the one to whom we are trying to present Christ. Because his beliefs about God and man are diametrically opposed to what we are trying to present from the Bible, our words often convey a totally different concept to his mind, and therefore one has to be extra careful that we are communicating to him properly. To a Hindu, the word God does not communicate much because, to him, everything, visible and invisible, is god or manifestations of god. To him, god is an unknowable and unknown force and not a person. We might say that the Hindu calls nature “god.” So, to begin by telling a Hindu that God loves him does not make much sense, as he himself is a part of god!: https://www.gotquestions.org/witnessing-Hindus.html

- How does God relate to time? | Creation.com – there are different ways of construing God’s eternity available to the Christian, because the Bible doesn’t fully explain the nature of God’s relation to time. One is called omnitemporality, which means that God has existed for an infinite duration of objectively temporal moments. This idea has become somewhat fashionable among some modern Christian philosophers. However, I see a deep incoherence in the idea. It seems impossible to count sequentially from negative ∞ to 0, much less negative ∞ to positive ∞. This means there can’t be an infinite series of moments…: https://creation.com/en/articles/god-and-time
- Evolution Explain Vertebrate Camera-Type Eye | Answers Research Journal – A literature review of eye evolution theories was completed. It was concluded that all attempts to explain the existence of the vertebrate eye by Darwinian evolution have failed. The eye is an excellent example of intelligent design and effectively illustrates the concept of irreducible complexity. In spite of numerous attempts during the past 150 years since Darwin, evolutionists have failed to offer a viable theory of eye evolution. The areas reviewed include its anatomy, physiology, genetics, and fossil record.: https://answersresearchjournal.org/evolution/vertebrate-camera-type-eye/
- The CCC paragraphs 2010, 2027, 2068 and gaining eternal life by works – CARM – The Roman Catholic Church in the Catholic Catechism teaches that we can merit grace necessary for salvation and that, after first having faith, we attain eternal life by works, baptism, and keeping the commandments…This obviously faulty teaching in the CCC is hugely problematic since it contradicts Scripture.: https://carm.org/the-ccc-paragraphs-2010-2027-2068-and-gaining-eternal-life-by-works
